I recently conducted a study on the reported “national scandal” of teachers leaving the profession. For example, 40% of teachers are found to leave within their first five years (Wilshaw, 2014). My study sought to understand not only what makes teachers quit but also what can be done to encourage them to stay in the profession.

A mixed methods research design was used, with 238 online survey respondents and 5 semi-structured interviews to gain individuals’ perspectives on their choices to remain in teaching or choose an alternative career path. The presence of “push” factors out of the teaching profession as well as “pull” factors towards seemingly more lucrative or attractive careers was acknowledged. Comparisons with the USA were unavoidable, since the shortage of teachers there has been well-documented over the last 20 years and the work of Ingersoll (2002), Faber (2010) and Day (2013) was used to further understand aspects of teachers’ working lives. It was noted that “pull” factors are more prevalent in the USA, but that they are on the increase in the UK possibly due to the stagnation of teacher pay.

My study examined policy factors, school factors and personal factors which contribute to attrition and asked how these can be mitigated to maintain a positive professional identity and sustained career commitment. Conclusions were drawn which have implications for teacher education, institutional policies and national education policy.

I found in my 2016 study that teachers in the UK are equally likely to quit, whether in years 2-5, 6-10 or 11-15 of teaching.

Teachers appeared to be able to identify when they are ‘losing their touch’ in the classroom, or, in the case of early career teachers, where they have not developed the art of teaching sufficiently. Participants in my study suggested they were increasingly willing to consider alternatives to teaching at all stages of their career. This finding should begin to dispel the accepted norm that teachers usually face their biggest career crossroads after around 12 years in the profession (Day, 2007). My study suggests that the group of teachers most likely to quit in the next two years comprises females between the ages of 30 and 39. Workload and disillusionment were the biggest “push” factors but one of the most cited factors that they would like to see improved about their working lives is being able to work more flexibly. Other improvement factors identified were better relationships with their leadership teams and experiencing a greater sense of appreciation and value. These were even noted to reduce the negative effect of high workload.

In Brazil, students that pass the Sugar Hopeful Womens Hg0yeIZD
and begin studying in a college or university are called "calouros" or more informally "bixos" ("bixetes" for girls), an alternate spelling of "bicho", which means "animal". Calouros are often subject to hazing , which is known as "trote" (lit. "prank") there. The first known hazing episode in Brazil happened 1831 at the Law School of BedStu Auburn Womens xlb1Qd

In Chile, during the first year of University, the student is called "mechón". During the firsts weeks of classes, 2nd year students perform "mechoneo" on 1st students. This "mechoneo" usually consist of several activities that are generally gruesome, like having to kiss a pig head and collect money in the street to get the freshmen belongings back. This tradition is every year less common, as universities and student federations started to prohibit it after several incidents. In 2017 only a few faculties of the University of Chile allowed this activity.

In Colombia, during the first year of University, the student is called "Primíparo". [ Bebe Katerina Womens fNwdtifn

At Danish universities, first year students are called "russer" (singular "rus"). The term is believed to be an abbreviation of the Latin "depositurus", which means "the man, who is about to give way". The term can be used both affectionately or derogatorily. The first year students are introduced to their respective institutes and subjects through activities held by older students. These activities are called "rusture" (singular "rustur") and the older students are called "rusvejledere" (lit. first year student tutor). These activities usually last a few days, up to a week in some cases, usually just days before the first lecture. While the term "rus" nor "rustur" have official status, the term "rusvejleder" usually does, as some faculties educate them for next year's new students.

At some Danish secondary education institutions ( gymnasium ), first year pupils are called "putter" (singular "put" or "putte") or "sutter" (singular "sut") which is the Danish word for pacifiers. These are not official titles, but it is a tradition among pupils in gymnasium to call the first year pupils this. It is in some cases used affectionately or derogatorily. The first year pupils, however, often identify themselves as "putter" or "sutter". First year of gymnasium is also sometimes called "putår" (lit. put year).

It can be disorienting to learn that people don’t always see us the way we see ourselves. I once had a coaching client named Kim, a smart, dedicated manager whose entire world had just been turned upside down by a 360 report. Even though she’d struggled with feelings of insecurity her whole career, her colleagues saw her as aggressive and arrogant in meetings. She had no idea what she was doing to create this perception. (Despite the benefits of some 360s, they can leave many questions unanswered.)

We can’t act on feedback until we truly understand it. Especially when we hear something new, it’s usually a good idea to ask a few trustworthy sources whether they’ve noticed the same behavior. Not only does this give us more detail about what we are doing to create a certain impression, it helps us avoid overcorrecting based on one person’s opinion. After all, as Roman philosopher Marcus Aurelius stated, “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact.”

But who should we ask? Our interviews with highly self-aware people provide some helpful guidance. Surprisingly, most reported keeping their feedback circle relatively small. One customer service manager noted, “I get feedback all the time, but not from all the people. I rely on a small, trusted group I know will tell me the truth.” These “ Vionic with Orthaheel Frances Womens HtqdPHAoJ
,” as we named them, were people they trusted and who would be brutally honest with them. Loving critics don’t necessarily need to be people we’re close to (even complete strangers have strangely New Balance MW978 Mens fzx2zpC
perceptions of our personalities). Out of the three loving critics Kim selected, I’d argue that the one she knew least well gave her the most valuable information.

With the help of her loving critics, Kim was soon able to build a better picture in her mind of how her behavior was coming across, which gave her the power to make different choices. Months later, Kim’s boss told me that she’d gone from one of his bottom performers to his most valued team member. If she hadn’t taken the time to understand the feedback she was given, it’s hard to imagine such a dramatic transformation.

Even when we’ve significantly improved a certain behavior, it doesn’t mean that the people around us will automatically notice. As leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith has aptly noted , it can be harder to change the perceptions of our behavior than the behavior itself. And if we spend energy improving based on feedback from our colleagues, but those same colleagues don’t notice, it can be discouraging.

For this reason, I also work with my coaching clients on the “public relations” aspects of their behavior. Shortly after receiving their feedback report, we choose one highly visible and symbolic action that will show how serious they are about changing. I once worked with Paul, who ran the radiology department in a large regional medical center. When I interviewed his employees, their morale was suffering. They told me that Paul didn’t seem to understand or care about their day-to-day challenges, which was frustrating and demoralizing.
